Alopecia Treatment:
Alopecia
(hair fall) can cause problem if not taken into notice for a longer period of
time, but it is curable. One just has to take the important precautionary
measures for complete prevention of alopecia.

Medications:
Ø Androgenic Alopecia: Usually this particular
kind of alopecia is not considered for being treated as most of the patients
can’t afford its expensive procedures. There are very limited medicated
treatments for this kind.
a- There are some tablets
given on prescription for this purpose. They are sold by the name of
finasteride tablets. They prevent the change of testosterone and normal
testosterone grows hair follicles back to their normal sizes. These tablets
also affect the patient mentally and tend to change their point of view about
their hair. They also increase number of hair in some cases. But side effects
are there.
b- Some lotions are also
available for the cure of androgenic alopecia. They have minoxidil and do not
require any prescriptions. These lotions are applied directly on hair-less
regions of the scalp and are reported for causing re-growth of hair. It is
available with different strengths of minoxidil, both having different effects.
Side effects are itchy and rough scalp and resuming of hair fall after quitting
the medication.
Ø Female-pattern Baldness: Only cure available for
this type is minoxidil lotion. This product has better effect in women and more
women respond to this medication positively. Some extreme cases also take
advantage from wigs and cosmetic surgeries or hair transplant.
Ø Alopecia areata: There is usually no cure
of this type of alopecia. Although medications are there, but usually waiting
patiently for the right time to come is a better option because this problem is
solved on its own after a certain specific time. Some of the medications
related to this type are as follows:
a- Steroid injections,
specifically the ones containing corticosteroids, are very effective. These are
actually natural hormones and work a bit against our immune system (body’s
defense). These injections prevent the immune system from attacking hair
follicles and promote hair growth to some extent. They can be used on various
hairless areas of the body like scalp, eye-brows, etc. Once this course begins,
it has to be continued for normal hair growth. If the patient gives up the alopecia
treatment, it starts again. Other side effects may include feeling of pain at
the site where injection is administered.
b- Corticosteroids may also
be available in the form of lotion, gel, creams, ointments or some kind of foam
for the convenience of the patients, as different patients ask for different
application options according to the intensity of their condition. These are
sold with the name of topical corticosteroids. They are usually advised to be
used for 3 months. It also has some side effects to offer. It cannot be used
anywhere else except on the scalp. These corticosteroids may cause atrophy of
scalp skin as well as spots or kind of acne. Tablets are not available because
they are found to cause some serious health hazards like ulcers, diabetes, etc.
c- Minoxidil lotion can be
considered for the cause but it has not been licensed for the treatment of this
particular type of alopecia. Even then some people do give it a try, as it has
been reported to cure many cases.
d- Immunotherapy is another
useful medication. It includes application of some prescribed chemical solution
on the scalp and the intensity of the dose is increased with every sitting.
After having the solution applied on the skin, one cannot go out under the sun
with uncovered head for about 24 hours, as this might cause some reaction of
the solution with the light and can result in allergy. Its side effects include
patches on the skin, severe allergic reaction and falling of hair after leaving
the medication.
e- Dithranol cream is also
applied and has results quite similar to the immunotherapy. It also causes
allergy when applied, then leads to hair growth gradually. This cream might
also cause scaling or staining of scalp, so it is not in common use.
f- Light therapy is also
employed for this type of alopecia. Skin is first made sensitive with certain
medicines and is then exposed to UV radiations. But this alopecia treatment is
not considered for long term effectiveness. Moreover, its side effects are much
stronger than the alopecia treatment itself, e.g., pigment alteration, skin
cancer, etc.
g- Other treatments like
acupuncture, aromatherapy (treatment with fragrant oils) and massages are also
often considered.
Home Remedies:
At
home, we can carry out very limited treatments but they are often very
effective. Oiling is one of the most effective remedies employed at home.
Regular oiling with good quality oil and regular washing of hair with a mild
shampoo are very worthwhile. Eating healthy and balanced food is also very
important for curing alopecia to some extent.
